My play The Stand In will be produced this winter with Fiasco Theater and WP Theater. I am so thrilled to be bringing this to life with these long-time friends and collaborators, along-side my director/muse/classmate Emily Young. Here’s a peek at the development of the play we did with Fiasco last year.
As an actor Crystal has spent her career performing in plays by living writers. Recent credits include The Saviors by Bubba Weiler and directed by Jack Serio at Atlantic Theater Company, Derangements by Nadja Leonhard-Hooper, directed by Annie Tippe for Clubbed Thumb and The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-Winning play Cold War Choir Practice by Ro Reddick and directed by Knud Adams. Crystal is an affiliated artist with Clubbed Thumb Theater where she has been developing and acting in “funny, strange, and provocative plays” for the past decade, including two iterations of Will Arbery’s Plano, directed by Taylor Reynolds, Abe Koogler’s Deep Blue Sound, directed by Arin Arbus, and her own play Find Me Here, which was directed for Summerworks by Caitlin Sullivan. As a writer she was a semi-finalist for the Clubbed Thumb Biennial Comission, a member of the early career writer’s group, and a playwright in the Clubbed Thumb directing fellowship for Winterworks with her play Ms. Lily, which was directed by Josiah Davis. She is a recipient of the NYSCA Arts Grant, a Theater World Award, for her Broadway debut in Birthday Candles, by Noah Haidle, and a nominee for the Lucille Lortel award for best featured performer for Cold War Choir Practice. Crystal also writes essays, including this one in American Theatre Magazine about motherhood, acting, and the experience of performing in Plano. You can sometimes catch her as a storyteller at The Moth MainStage events around the country. She is originally from Grass Valley, California.
